Over the past year, we’ve been Visiting Artists and guest facilitators at an inclusive community art studio, The Canvas, in Juneau, Alaska. We introduced a progressive, hands-off method of facilitation in the studio, allowing artists to thoughtfully and independently engage in art-making. By relying only on post hoc guidance, provided in the form of discussion or criticism, each artist was able to discover and demonstrate their capacity to invent an innovative mode of art-making and ongoing creative practice.
NEW VOICES is a selection of work created by the program’s most promising and successful artists since our arrival. Each piece is representative of a highly original body of work currently in production and demonstrates commitment to a singular personal vision. These are Juneau's most diligent and dedicated artists, exploring compelling ideas on a level unprecedented in Juneau’s contemporary art community; this contribution is a testament to the value and importance of the progressive art studio model in this field. With the dissolution of "Outsider Art" as a genre in an increasingly pluralistic contemporary art world, it's our intention to eliminate the sympathetic viewer and discuss this work accurately in the context of contemporary art practice.
